1906 - THE CHURCH OF ST. PHILIP - 2006

2507 Bryant Avenue North

Minneapolis, MN  55411

Celebrating 100 years on the north side –

praying for peace, working for justice.

FULL TIME POSITION AVAILABLE

MINISTRY OF MUSIC / MINISTRY OF EVANGELIZATION

The Church of St. Philip is located in North Minneapolis, an ethnically diverse, predominantly African American neighborhood.  Poverty and its associated elements are part of the fabric of this area: families in crisis, gang activity, and drugs.  North Minneapolis ranks among the highest in the nation in several categories: the density of children under the age of 15, teen pregnancy, and HIV infection.

Yet there is a dedicated core of parishioners who love the parish and are committed to staying.  Despite the statistics and news reports, we feel safe here.  Through numerous children’s programs, adult programs, and social outreach, St. Philip is a 7-day-a-week church engaged with the neighborhood.  Many residents of the area, some of whom belong to no church, refer to St. Philip as “my church.”

Six days out of seven, St. Philip appears to be a busy, vibrant Black church.  But on Sunday mornings, the congregation looks more like the White population it served in earlier times.

We want to make the Church of St. Philip a place where our friends and family from the neighborhood would like to join us on Sunday, not just during the week.  We recognize the critical role that Music Ministry plays in achieving that goal.  We know that the music commonly in use today in Catholic liturgy is failing to provide the opportunity for praise and revitalization of the spirit that African Americans have traditionally enjoyed.  We want to change that.  We want to be different.

Can you help us make that happen?

We are offering a FT position, hours to be divided between music ministry, including the

development of worship in the African American style (while also honoring our European roots), as well as evangelization to our immediate neighbors.  We strive for liturgical excellence and spirit-filled worship.

Strong keyboard skills are essential, with experience in directing and building a choir.  Knowledge and understanding of Catholic liturgy is a plus.  Salary DOQ and commensurate with experience.

Position will remain open until filled.
