Job Summary/Background:

 

The Executive Vice President, U.S. Operations (EVP, USOps) will lead the agency’s strategy of more fully engaging Catholics in the United States to understand and act in solidarity with the poor and suffering people around the world.  The EVP, USOps will ensure that this strategy is integrated with other important aspects of CRS’ operations both internationally and domestically.  The EVP, USOps will direct and oversee the management of the U.S. Operations department.  Education, action and advocacy are at the heart of CRS programs in the United States.  The EVP, USOps will relate with Catholic leaders, dioceses, universities and institutions across the United States.  A comprehensive knowledge of the Catholic Church in the United States and a full understanding and appreciation of Catholic Social Teaching is a critical ingredient in the EVP, USOps’ ability to articulate and direct the strategy to serve Catholics in the United States as they live their faith in solidarity with their brothers and sisters around the world. 

 

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

1.  Strategic Leadership

  1. Provide overall vision and strategy for the Agency to further engage substantial numbers of U.S. Catholics in education, advocacy, resource sharing, direct relationships, and other programs and actions with and on behalf of the poor and suffering overseas.
  2. Lead the U.S. Operations department in program development and team building in support of the Agency’s vision for solidarity through the dual constituency strategy
  3. Collaborate with counterparts, particularly Charitable Giving and Awareness, as well as Overseas Operations, to ensure integrated approaches, processes, and communication systems support the relationships inherent in the program goals of the Agency.
  4. Participate as a member of the Agency’s Executive Leadership Team in developing and leading strategic visioning, planning and management for the Agency.  Help to direct an inter-divisional strategy to achieve the goal and objectives of the Agency’s strategies.

 

 

2. U.S. Operations Department Management

  1. Provide management oversight and guidance to the U.S. Regional Directors and their offices, the Advocacy unit, the Domestic Programs Support Unit, the Constituency Relations and Support Unit, and the Quality Assurance and Support Unit.
  2. Direct department strategies and guide and oversee unit strategies and annual program plans.  Administer and monitor department budget and expenses.
  3. Supervise and advise U.S. Regional Directors and Senior Directors.
  4. Oversee the continued development of systems designed to more fully integrate the work of domestic and overseas operations with the ultimate goal of more directly engaging constituents in the work of CRS.

 

3. Representation and Public Speaking

  1. Represent CRS and its initiatives at speaking events, at conferences, with working groups and in the media to achieve CRS’ vision for solidarity.
  2. Represent global solidarity and international social justice initiatives and the Agency’s strategic plan to staff and partners around the world.
  3. Represent CRS to other national Catholic organizations at planning sessions and meetings to develop and implement agendas around common themes and strengthen relationships with other Catholic agencies, including USCCB-Justice, Peace and Human Development and other organizations of USCCB, as well as other national Catholic organizations.

 

Key Working Relationships:

Internal - Executive Leadership Team; USOps Regional Directors, Senior Directors and Unit Directors; agency department Directors; Country Representatives; and CRS Board of Directors.

External - Bishops; diocesan directors; diocesan offices staff; priests; parish leaders; CRS partners and participants in the U.S. and overseas; Catholic agencies and other counterparts in the U.S. and overseas; and University leadership.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

5 Regional Directors, 2 Senior Directors, Special Assistant, and Executive Assistant

 

 

Qualifications:

1.      Master’s degree in Theology, Social Work, Non-Profit Management or related field required.

2.      Demonstrated servant leadership experience and experience in leading and building teams.  Possess the ability to build collaborative relationships both internally and externally, experience enabling and mentoring others, and strong listening skills.

3.      Strong appreciation of CRS’ mission, vision and institutional culture.  Strong appreciation of the work of CRS overseas.  Overseas experience a plus.

4.      Strong understanding of and experience working with the Catholic Church in the United States and with U.S. Catholic dioceses.  Knowledge of the structure and hierarchy of the U.S. Catholic Church.

5.      Demonstrated application of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching in personal and professional life.  Personally motivated by the values and principles of the Catholic Church.

6.      Possess a global perspective on solidarity and international social justice.

7.      Knowledge of U.S. political processes and policies both at the grassroots level and in Washington. D.C.

8.      Strategic thinker with extensive experience in strategic planning for long and short-term goals.

9.      Excellent staff and program management skills with the ability to build on existing experience as well as to think creatively and encourage innovation.

10.  Excellent communication skills with the ability to be an effective public speaker in diverse settings and to motivate and inspire others.

11.  Strong organization skills and experience in performing at high levels within complex institutional structures.

12.  Strong negotiation skills with the ability to relate to different groups and to bridge different agendas in order to promote CRS’ mission and vision.

13.  Possess a strong commitment to and sensitivity for diversity.  Candidates who are from diverse backgrounds, who are conversant in Spanish, or who have experience working with the U.S. Hispanic community.

14.  Knowledge of fundraising and marketing.

15.  Must be practicing Catholic.

16.  Ability to travel up to 30 % of the time mostly in the U.S. with some overseas travel.
